Dental Cleanings

Keeping The Tooth Decay Away

At Family Tree Dental, we’ve been helping the families of St. Paul, MN maintain great oral health and radiant smiles for over 30 years, providing the high-quality dental care that our practice has always been known for. In order to create healthy smiles, we always recommend getting a professional dental cleaning with us at least twice each year, every six months. Even for those who have the perfect oral hygiene routine of brushing, flossing, and rinsing at home still needs a dental cleaning in order to keep your teeth completely free from tooth decay

Routine dental cleanings are important to maintaining good oral hygiene. Professional cleaning by a hygienist can remove mineralized plaque that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. It is recommended you go in for a cleaning once every six months.

Why Are Dental Cleanings Necessary?

The main cause of tooth decay is plaque, which is formed from leftover food particles and bacteria that build up on your teeth and under your gums. While a normal oral hygiene routine can remove most of these particles and bacteria, often times there are areas that even the most thorough brushing and flossing won’t be able to reach. At the same time, your average toothbrush and mouthwash won’t be strong enough to clear away any plaque that’s already formed on the teeth.

With a professional dental cleaning, a hygienist will use special tools that to remove this hard plaque build up and ensure that your teeth are as spotless as can be. We can even clean underneath the gum line, where plaque often forms out of view.

What’s The Process For My Dental Cleaning

For your dental cleaning with us at Family Tree Dental, your appointment will typically last anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much cleaning needs to be done on your teeth. As the hygienist uses their special cleaning and scaling tools to clear away the plaque, you may hear some noise as they grind against the surface of your teeth, but you typically won’t feel any pain or discomfort.

Once we’re done scaling the teeth, which simply means clearing away the plaque, the final phase is giving your teeth a nice polish. We use a fluoride polish that will buff your teeth while providing them with some essential vitamins and minerals to make them stronger. Once we’ve polished every tooth, you’ll rinse your mouth out with some mouthwash and be good to go.
